‘Out of the Ashes’ is part political essay, using the 2011 August riots as a starting point, and part memoir, drawing on David Lammy’s own dysfunctional upbringing, in Tottenham, North London, the constituency he now politically represents. The book attempts to analyse the causes of the witnessed disorder by presenting specific, provocative examples and suggesting possible long term solutions. The book argues dismissing the riots as ‘criminality, pure and simple’ (Lammy, 2011: 236) as Prime Minster David Cameron did during the disturbances, is not only a weak, unsubstantial stance, it is also ultimately incredibly detrimental to society.
