Tiwana, N. and Winterdyk J. (2012) Environmental Scan of Gang Exit Initiatives: A North American Perspective

Recent evidence has indicated the importance of addressing youth gang membership and how to assist or facilitate their possible exiting before the members become fully entrenched into the youth gang lifestyle. This environmental scan highlights key strategies that gang intervention programmes in North America have employed to help gang members desist from the gang. This was accomplished through a comprehensive review of the programmes from the internet and one interview with a project manager. The environmental scan found that many programmes have adopted the ‘wraparound’ philosophy and are collaborating with organisations in the community to effectively address the gang members’ complex needs. This paper concludes with recommendations to develop responsive interventions and programmes for this population.
